Indonesia Remote Worker Visa E33G: Rules for Bali and Beyond

The E33G is Indonesia’s remote worker visa. It lets a foreign national live in Indonesia for one year while working for a company based outside the country. To qualify, you need an annual income of at least US$60,000, a bank balance of at least US$2,000, and an employment agreement with a foreign company.

Most people know it as the Bali digital nomad visa, but it is valid for the whole of Indonesia. The visa has been available since April 1, 2024. We checked the requirements and fees on the Directorate General of Immigration’s E33G page in October 2026.

This guide explains who qualifies, what the visa costs, how the application works, what you cannot do on it, and the Indonesian tax rules that apply to long stays.

Key takeaways

  • You need income of at least US$60,000 a year and a bank statement for the last three months showing at least US$2,000.
  • The official checklist asks for an employment agreement with a company established outside Indonesia.
  • The stay is one year. The immigration page says the stay permit can be extended online.
  • The four official fee items add up to Rp7,000,000 for a one-year stay, as of October 2026.
  • A stay of more than 183 days in 12 months can make you an Indonesian tax resident. The visa does not settle your tax position.

What the E33G remote worker visa is

The E33G is a Limited Stay Visa (Visa Tinggal Terbatas). When an immigration officer admits you, you receive a Limited Stay Permit, often called an ITAS or KITAS, and a Re-entry Permit. Both are issued automatically on arrival, according to the immigration page.

The purpose of the visa is to live in Indonesia while you carry out work for a foreign company. While the Re-entry Permit is valid, you can leave and come back, and you can also travel as a tourist or visit friends and family. This is the main practical gain over short visit visas: one permit covers a full year, without repeated exits. Our guide to visa runs explains why repeated border hops on tourist visas carry real risk.

Indonesia does not require a local sponsor for the E33G. You apply yourself through the official e-visa site.

E33G requirements

The immigration page lists general documents for all applicants, plus special requirements for the remote worker category.

RequirementWhat the official page asks for
PassportValid for at least six months
IncomeBank statement showing salary or income of at least US$60,000 per year
Proof of fundsBank statement for the last three months, in your name or your sponsor’s, showing at least US$2,000 or the equivalent
WorkEmployment agreement with a company established outside Indonesia
PhotoRecent color photo, taken within the last year
OtherA curriculum vitae and a travel itinerary
AccountAn account on evisa.imigrasi.go.id before you apply

Employees and freelancers

The special requirement on the official page is an employment agreement with a foreign company. The page does not describe a separate route for self-employed people or for business owners who invoice their own clients. If you are a freelancer, ask the immigration office or the e-visa help desk how your contracts will be assessed before you pay.

Official fees

Indonesia lists the E33G fees as non-tax state revenue (PNBP). These are the official amounts, as of October 2026. Agents and visa services charge their own fees on top.

Fee itemAmount
Limited Stay VisaRp500,000
Category II visa verification feeRp2,000,000
Limited Stay Permit, up to one yearRp3,000,000
Re-entry Permit, up to one yearRp1,500,000
Total for a one-year stayRp7,000,000

The e-visa system shows the amount due at payment. Check it there, because fee schedules in Indonesia can change with new regulations.

How to apply

  1. Create an account on the official e-visa site, then choose the Remote Worker purpose.
  2. Upload your passport, photo, CV, itinerary, three months of bank statements and your employment agreement.
  3. Pay the fees online. The immigration page states that processing takes five working days after payment.
  4. Enter Indonesia within 90 days of the visa being issued. If you do not use it within that time, you need a new visa.
  5. On arrival, the officer admits you and your stay permit and re-entry permit are issued.

The visa validity, which is the 90-day window to enter, is not the same as your length of stay. Your one-year stay starts from the permit issued at entry.

Length of stay, extensions and travel

The E33G gives a one-year stay. The immigration page says extensions can be done online through the e-visa site and that the permit can be converted to another stay permit. Advisers such as EY described the visa at launch as renewable for one additional year. Confirm the current extension rules in the e-visa system before your permit runs out.

Family members are handled separately. The e-visa system lists a “Family Dependant for Remote Worker” visa type, so spouses and children apply under their own file.

What you cannot do on an E33G visa

The visa covers remote work for a company outside Indonesia. The immigration page lists these prohibited activities:

  • Staying longer than the permitted period.
  • Working in a job that does not match the stay permit.
  • Selling goods or services, unless your job requires it.

In practice, this means no local employment, no Indonesian clients and no local business activity, such as running a villa rental or teaching classes. Enforcement in Bali is active. In September 2026, immigration offices in Bali announced cases involving remote worker permit holders. These included a deportation where the holder was accused of being dishonest when obtaining the permit, and an investigation into two permit holders suspected of illegally working as motorbike instructors.

Indonesian tax rules for E33G holders

The visa does not decide your tax position. Under Indonesian rules, as summarized by PwC’s Indonesia tax summary, an individual is tax resident in Indonesia if any one of these applies:

  • They reside in Indonesia.
  • They are present in Indonesia for more than 183 days in any 12-month period.
  • They are present during a tax year and intend to reside in Indonesia.

A one-year remote worker stay can meet the 183-day test. Indonesian residents are generally taxed on worldwide income at progressive rates, with a top rate of 35% on taxable income above IDR 5 billion. PwC also notes that a foreign national who becomes tax resident may be taxed only on Indonesian-source income for the first four years, if they meet certain skill requirements. Whether a remote worker meets those requirements depends on the facts.

Tax treaties can change the outcome where two countries both see you as resident. Your home country may also keep taxing you. Our explainers on how tax authorities decide where you live and how to track your days for tax residency cover the basic ideas. People planning a full year in Bali often ask an Indonesian tax adviser about registration and filing before they arrive.

Bali and beyond: how the E33G compares

Bali is the best-known base, but the permit covers all of Indonesia. Holders are free to base themselves in places such as Lombok, Yogyakarta or Jakarta instead.

In Southeast Asia, the closest alternatives are Malaysia and Thailand. Malaysia’s pass asks for US$24,000 for tech roles and US$60,000 for listed non-tech roles, and it allows up to 24 months. Thailand uses a different model with its Destination Thailand Visa. Read our guides to the Malaysia DE Rantau Nomad Pass and the Thailand DTV. For a global list, see digital nomad visas in 2026.
